After a brief hiatus, Propick Sports is back in the saddle. Today's 5 Star release is the Atlanta Braves -165 over the San Diego Padres. Despite leading the National League West, the Padres lack offensive firepower and will find themselves out of first place by September.
With Tim Hudson on the mound, the Braves will look to avenge last night's mishap, which occurred when Billy Wagner blew a save opportunity. This play is an easy call and I recommend going table max.....Braves -165 over the Padres.
Kudos to Albert Gore III. According to reports in the New York Post, Young Al is quite the prize fighter. In a recent charity boxing event, the son of the Internet Creater and Masseuse hound, made quick work of his opponent and in the process, helped raise funds for a charity aimed at fighting Lupus. Meanwhile, Big Al II cannot seem to shake allegations regarding "inappropriate" behavior around several different masseuses. According to one massage therapist in charge of keeping Al's Hogan in check,"Gore shrugged off the towel and stood naked in front of me, before pointing to his groin and declaring take care of this". These are just allegations, however at the rate these keep "popping up", Big Al may never want to hear the phrase "happy ending" for the rest of his life.

Redemption Play......
Following an abysmal outing from Mike Pelphrey and the Mets, I am rolling the dice on the Oakland A's tonight -135 over the Angels. While I have made a small fortune betting against the A's and their lackluster offense, tonight's play is a bet on Ben Sheets. Furthermore, the Angels have dominated the A's in Oakland (12-3 in their last 15 games), so this is a contrarian play. The release....A's -135 over the Angels.
Party in Miami...........
In today's baseball action I like the Red Sox +106 over the Blue Jays and the Mets +115 over the Braves. The Red Sox play is just a gut feel, despite their rash of injuries as of late. As for the Mets, this is an excellent team at home and I expect a strong outing out of Pelphrey today. While the Braves have played lights out baseball since the month of May, I expect to see a spirited effort from the home team.
After absolutely NAILING the Washington Nationals over the Giants last night, my spirits were further lifted by the Cliff Lee signing. As I opined yesterday, a Cliff Lee trade to the Yankees would have been awful for baseball. With Lee's arrival in Texas, this makes for compelling post season baseball as the offensive minded Rangers add a much needed stud to their starting rotation.
Congratulations to Carmelo Anthony who is getting married in New York today. Hopefully this will serve as a positive omen, as Knick fans (still smarting from the Lebron snub), are hoping to see him in New York come 2011. Contrary to several misplaced rumors, Carmelo's wedding in not being held at the local Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich, Connecticut nor will the Wedding attire involve "light brown boat shoes" made so popular following "The Decision" by King James. Unfortunately, Lebron opted for his patented Nike's as he joined fellow stars Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh at last night's "WWE Themed" celebration party held at the American Airlines Arena. As Lethal Weapon three got the crowd all worked up, it was odd to see King James off to the side of Dwayne Wade. Then again, the beauty of his decision centers around "Lebron not having to score 30 points every night".

Another Feel Good Story....
After thoroughly examining tonights games, I noticed one that stood out like a sore thumb. The San Francisco Giants, fresh off an impressive sweep over the Brewers, find themselves travelling to Washington, DC. to face rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg.
Despite an unimposing lineup, the Giants managed to score 36 runs in their series against the Brewers. Furthermore, as impressive as Strasburg has pitched, he has been prone to giving up walks and putting men on base. In addition, the Giants send a formidable pitcher of their own to the mound tonight in Matt Cain. With all this seemingly indicating a "toss up", why does Vegas have the Nationals laying -150? Is the Strasburg effect already moving the lines? In any event, with the line begging you to take the Giants, I am releasing the Nationals -150 tonight. Following an impressive week, I look for the Giants to struggle against a Nationals squad that has played well at home this year.
Exactly one day after Lebron James announced his decision to "stack the deck" by joining the Miami Heat, the Yankees appear poised to make another "feel good" announcement of their own. After already having the most expensive team in the history of baseball, the Yankees are now looking to add pitcher Cliff Lee to their fantasy team. Even Yankee fans are expressing doubts about this move. At some point enough is enough. While the goal of every team is to win a championship, by acquiring Cliff Lee, the Yankees will have essentially wrapped up another World Series and left very little to the imagination for even the most diehard fans.
Although the Yankees are an organization steeped in tradition, this type of gratuitous spending will no doubt disgust everyone outside of the New York area. While New Yorkers lament about the Miami Heat "cheapening" their future accomplishments by buying a ready made title contender, the Yankees are going to be no different if they decide to add Cliff Lee to their roster loaded with Hall of Fame players.

Lebron James: Court Jester......
After watching the public relations disaster, known as Lebron James, all I can say is: the only thing missing from this man's entourage is a barking dog and a few more stagehands. Despite prior attempts to come across as a "man of the people", Lebron James, with ample help from ESPN, now embodies everything that is wrong with professional sports. Leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers is not an effront to NBA fans but the manner in which this whole process was conducted lacked class.
Billion Dollar Brand. Throughout this whole circus several things became apparent. Lebron James (again with the help of ESPN, his handlers, etc.) was hellbent on making this summer all about him and increasing his worldwide celebrity. While one can certainly fathom the importance of the business decision, the pre-packaged, mass produced "Lebron watch", far eclipsed anything the sports world has ever seen. At times throughout this prolonged ordeal, this appeared to resemble a social media experiment gone wrong. While other NBA stars around him were reserved and humble (specifically Kevin Durant), Lebron's media frenzy was about as subtle as a street hooker at a wedding.
After weeks of keeping people on the edge of their seats, rumors started flying as to where Lebron was seen and who he was with. Again, Lebron said nothing he just pulled the strings like a puppetmaster and allowed this nonsense to unfold at a fever pitch. The media acted accordingly and sports fans couldn't get enough of the rumors that were swirling. Unfortunately for team Lebron, the mixed signals that were sent out led many fans and teams to believe that they were, for a lack of a better term, being "jerked around". As a result, by the time the decision was announced after 9:20 pm est, most people already knew Lebron was headed to Miami.
Boat Shoes. What was more ridiculous- Lebron's goofy boat shoes or the fact that ESPN was broadcasting from a Boys and Girls Club in Greenwich, Conn.? Seriously, the Boys and Girls Club is a Fantastic organization and for Lebron's fervent support, I commend him. However, Greenwich is hardly synonomous with underpriveleged youth. Could not ESPN and Team Lebron have picked a different venue closer to ESPN corporate headquarters in Bristol? Furthermore, Knick fans felt slighted by the fact that Lebron chose a venue so close to their practice facility to announce he is going to play for a division rival.
Poorly Handled. Whatever lipstick Lebron and Company choose to put on this pig, it will fall short. While I believe his decision to join a "dream team" during his prime years is puzzling, in relation to greats such as : jordan, Kobe, Duncan, etc., it certainly is his right. However, what does this say about Lebron? Does Lebron want a championship by any means necessary even if it means being Dwayne Wade's sidekick? While he may be the bigger marketing machine, this city and team is Dwayne Wade's. Again, going to the Heat is no crime, however the manner in which this process unfolded leaves many, including myself, with a bad taste in our mouth.
When Michael Jordan announced his return to the NBA he did so with a brief statement. Other megastars handled their negotiations in a more discreet fashion. Lebron made his bed and now must deal with the consequences. While ratings were through the roof, this process resembled a reality show, where the main draw basically said "I will do anything for publicity and my end game involves prostituting my brand for every last dollar". Ask yourself this: what other star athlete would have conducted a similar process? Could you really see Kobe Bryant, Derek Jeter, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, (not to mention former NBA greats), going through with this over the top ESPN special? PT Barnum said it best "there's a sucker born every minute". During this drawn out process the fans were left feeling like PT Barnums stagehands.

Live From South Africa......
After opening up their series against the Oakland A's with two straight wins, the Yankees are looking to keep their mojo going in tonight's finale. However, the Yankees are sending an inconsistent AJ Burnett to the hill against the A's Gio Gonzalez.
As poorly as Burnett has pitched at times throughout the season, this is the perfect lineup for him to regain his confidence against. Despite only being a few games under .500, the A's are an abysmal offensive squad and unless Gonzalez pitches a shutout,I expect the Yankees to have no trouble in Oakland tonight. Furthermore, expect Burnett to keep the A's hitters in check. At -120 this line is begging you to take the Yanks. While I usually avoid such "value traps", I cannot contain myself. Tonight's release....Yankees -120 over the A's.
After a month long hiatus, I finally got a call from "Dream". As someone who embodies the "ultimate sportsman", Dream decided to embark on a trip to the World Cup with a few friends. Sounds like a good idea right? Unfortnately for Dream, this whole tournament has been a nightmare. "Morons blowing horns all game and even outside in the streets. Furthermore, how many games can end in a friggin shoot out? Could you imagine the NBA championship being decided on an overtime free throw shooting competition? Or even worse a layup drill?" As disgusted as Dream is with the whole trip, that has not stopped him from releasing the Germans today. Dream's release.....Germany over Spain.

Happy 4th......
In a continuing effort to shower my loyal reader's with dinero, Propick Sports is releasing a July 4th double header. In the first game I am laying the heavy lumber with the Yankees and Phil Hughes (-220) over the Blue Jays. This is the Boss' birthday and even in George's diminished state of mind, the Yankees are not going to lay an egg on their owners birthday. Despite playing well following a loss, the Blue Jays are playing a Yankees team who has been dominant at home. The release: Yankees -220 over the Blue Jays. If you fear laying the big odds, take the Yankees runline (-1.5) -115.
Nothing is more American than the St. Louis Cardinals playing at home on July 4th. Therefore, it is only fitting that I release the Cards -150 over the Brewers, in what is sure to be an excellent pitching match up between Wainwright and Gallardo. On the surface, this game appears to be an easy call with the Cardinals sporting a 44-20 record in Wainwright's last 64 starts. However, the Brewers are 16-6 in their last 22 games in St. Louis. That being said, the Cardinals are a good team coming off a loss and with their ace on the hill, I recommend laying the -150 and taking the Cards over the Brewers.

Fresh off my prescient Mets call last night, I am back and ready to kick off July with some major fireworks. In an effort to stay consistent, I am coming back with a familiar team as my theme remains intact.
The Yankees have lost the first two games in their series against a below average Seattle Mariners team. Much like the Mets yesterday, the Yankees are facing indignation, in the form of a sweep. With their big ace on the hill, I have no doubt the Yankees wll win this game. Problem is at -350, this line is obscene. As a result, I am releasing the Yankees runline (-1.5) -175. While this is still a heavy number to be laying, I think it's a no brainer. Take the Yankees runline (-1.5)-175 0ver the Mariners in todays afternoon action.
